Surveyors and Land Surveying (then and now): Land surveying dates back to the time of the Pharaohs in ancient Egypt. The Pharaohs appointed certain land to different members of the ruling dynasty's court to collect collect taxes. Hieroglyphics in ancient tombs in Egypt show land surveyors measuring with knotted rope. Today in the profession of land surveying we still use some of the same methods employed by ancient surveyors when the surveying requires only a cursory evaluation. Land surveying equipment and methods of evaluation have progressed from knotted ropes to steel tapes (chains), transits, then electronic distance measuring lasers, and the latest commonly found advancement available to most surveyors is high precision global positioning systems commonly referred to as GPS. The following is a list of equipment you may find in most any land surveying pickup or surveyors office: Land surveying grade GPS, total station (theodolite with laser distance measuring), steel chain, compass, hip chain (our local Colorado surveyors call this a string box), clinometer, differential level, selection of tripods, field book and/or electronic data collector, large format plotter (surveyors drafting machine), cadd map software, and digital camera, metal locater, shovels, picks, hammers, jack, and come-along (so we can pull ourselves out of a ditch if necessary).
